Job Interview Do’s & Don’ts

Have you ever wondered…“Why can’t I get a JOB or the RIGHT job???” Well, maybe it’s because you’re just not as prepared as you could be. I’m going to help you solve this issue or at least give you the 1, 2, 3‘s on how to better prepare for a job interview.

I think there are a few common mistakes that job seekers make which can definitely be a deciding factor in not getting a good job. They start with a lack of research on the company they are applying for and not asking the correct questions when called for an interview. They end with not looking the part, not being mentally prepared and not showing up early with proper documentation and alone.

You might be asking yourself, “How do I do that???” or “Where do I start???”It’s actually quite simple.

First, we’ll start with researching the companies you will be applying with. You should always walk into an interview knowing as much as you can about the office or company you are applying with and the individual you will be interviewing with.  If you are thinking about applying for a job look into the company online (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing, or the company’s website). This will help you see if the company is a right match for you and if they can offer you what you need.  You will want to try and get an understanding for what the company and the interviewer is looking for in a potential employee. This will help you with answering the tuff questions like, “Why do you think you are right for this position?” and “What can you bring to the company that would add value?”. By doing the research you will be able to word your answers to fit exactly what the company is looking for in a potential employee. Second, if you are contacted for an interview  ask for the name and title of whom you will be meeting with, that way you can look into the individual on the company’s website. Also, confirm the address and ask if upon arrival there are any parking instructions you will need to be aware of, so you can prepare your time frame for those obstacles. Make sure to ask about the dress attire.  Third, you need to take a look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Do I look the part for this job?”. Now, this is a head to toe look so take your time and don’t be afraid to ask someone else’s opinion. You need to start with your hair…this includes color, cut and style. When entering into the professional field you need to look professional!! Hair should be natural colors, the cut and style should be conservative. Make up should be light with a natural look as well, never over done with bold, bright or really dark colors. Now it is time to pick out an outfit for the big day. Let’s first look into your closet and see what’s interview appropriate and what’s not. Nice clean, unstained clothing that is ironed and smelling fresh (don’t overdue the perfume/cologne…remember too much of a good thing isn’t always good thing) is a great start to being appropriate. Make sure your clothes fit your body correctly and the style is conservative (meaning everything that should be covered is). Make sure you wear closed toe shoes.  Now let’s talk about what’s not appropriate…well, this list is a bit longer. Now you shouldn’t wear anything that would be considered club attire, no form fitting clothes, nothing see through and no platform/stilettos shoes. Make sure all tattoos are covered completely and that you are always wearing a SMILE!!! Fourth, make sure you are mentally prepared and know what you can do for that company. Do mock interviews and remind yourself of your strengths and weaknesses, these can be key to being hired. Make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes early, with 2 resumes and alone.
